Four Score and Seven Years Ago, Celebrate President’s Day With Abraham Lincoln At The Hollywood Theater in Pittsburgh.

Sunday 07 February, 2010

One of our most beloved president’s Abraham Lincoln , will be making an appearance  in the 1939 film classic “Young Mr. Lincoln”  on Saturday January 13th at 7:00 PM. Jack Puglisi, local Pittsburgh artist and speaker, will also be answering question about Lincoln’s life, accomplishments and legacy before  the screening of the film.

1939, the year of Young Mr. Lincoln,(Henry Fonda) was also the year of Frank Capra’s Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, in which Jefferson Smith (James Stewart) communes with The Lincoln Memorial to revive his faith in the Constitution. For people born in 1890s, like Ford and Capra, Abraham Lincoln was America. Somehow Lincoln sheltered them from the incalculable horror of their Civil War, a war commemorated in every town daily and still alive in relatives who had fought in it or been born slaves. Somehow Lincoln embodied feelings that transcended sordid reality, that gave the war a kind of happy ending: suffering, redemption, a new freedom.

Young Mr. Lincoln is a 1939 fictionalized biography/drama film about the early life of President Abraham Lincoln, directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda. Ford and producer Darryl F. Zanuck fought for control of the film, to the point where Ford destroyed unwanted takes for fear the studio would use them in the movie. Screenwriter Lamar Trotti was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Writing/Original Story.

In 2003, Young Mr. Lincoln was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

So join us for an evening with Honest Abe at the Hollywood Theatre, February 13th at 7:00 PM.

Groundhog Day 7:00 With Special Guest Brian O’Neill
Phil Connors is the arrogant and egotistical weatherman for local station WPBH-TV Pittsburgh. He has disdain for those with who he works as well as for his viewers. But he has the most disdain for Groundhog Day held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, which he is to cover for the third time in his career, this year with Rita and Larry, the station’s new producer and cameraman respectively. Phil wants to get in and out of Punxsutawney as quickly as possible, but a snowstorm forces the threesome to stay an extra night in town after the Groundhog Day festivities. When Phil awakens the next morning, he is experiencing what he thinks is déjà vu. In reality, he is experiencing that Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney all over again. The same happens the following day and the following. As Phil relives that same Groundhog Day over and over again, he goes through a myriad of highs and lows. But as he comes to the realization that Groundhog Day may be his fate for eternity, he also comes to other realizations, such as that his actions have no long term consequences, but that knowledge, especially as it relates to Rita, can be a powerful and dangerous thing. The plot finds a New York gang having to cross the territory of rivals in order to get to their own ‘hood. And so The Warriors begin their long journey from the Bronx back to Coney Island. The second-in-command, Swan, takes charge, though the hot-headed Ajax openly voices his desire to be acting gang warlord. The Warriors slowly cross the dangerous Bronx and Manhattan territories, narrowly escaping police and other gangs every step of the way.

Rocky Horror Picture Show Midnight

This is no ordinary party, no ordinary night. This is the unveiling of the Dr’s latest creation: Rocky; A man-made Adonis that will give…absolute pleasure. This is an exceedingly grand visual and musical camp satire of the golden days of the B-movie horror and science-fiction genres. Projected along with a musical soundtrack to give “audience participation” a new meaning in dimension, time and space, this shall be a night that both Brad and Janet will remember for a very, very long time in the sexually kinky, rock ‘n roll (f)rock-opera world of a gender-bending scientist…and his time warped plans.

Tuesday

The Hustler 7:00
Eddie Felson(Paul Newman) is arrogance personified. He is an expert pool player and spends his time along with partner Charlie Burns hustling a few dollars from unsuspecting dopes. He decides that the time has come to play in the big leagues and challenges renowned pool player Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason). In a forty-hour marathon, Felson hits both highs and lows: part way through the match he’s up $18,000 but doesn’t know when to quit. He drinks too much and loses everything, including his confidence in his game. Slowly, he regroups and with the help of his girlfriend, Sarah Packard, builds up his self-esteem. Ignoring Sarah’s advice however, his driving ambition once again takes over leading to tragedy in his personal life and a re-match with Minnesota Fats

Stalag 17 9:30
No one has ever escaped from Stalag 17, a POW camp for American airmen near the Danube. Maybe that’s because there’s a spy in barracks four. The German guards seem to know everything that’s happening before it happens. Most of the American POWs suspect Sergeant J.J. Sefton, whose wheeling-and-dealing rates him special privileges from the camp guards. When Lieutenant Dunbar arrives at the prison camp, and is accused of blowing up an ammunition train, the American prisoners must expose the stoolie before he informs the Germans where Dunbar is hiding, AND get Dunbar out of the “unescapable” camp before the SS arrives to take him into custody.

Wednesday

Stalag 17 7:00
During WWII, in Stalag (which is German for prison) 17, the prisoners are dumbfounded as to how the Germans know when someone’s trying to escape. Recently, two tried to escape and never made past just outside the camp. Sefton, a hustler and wheeler dealer, said that they wouldn’t. And it also seems that Sefton doesn’t mind that he has to trade with the Germans for some extra food or whatever and has no desire to escape. When they lose some valuable materials like a radio, or when a Lieutenant Dunbar, who just arrived, and who also blew up an ammunition train, and who also has some (unpleasant) history with Sefton, is arrested, they assume that Sefton’s an informant. And while Sefton adamantly claims he is not, they don’t turn their back on him or trust him, and would like nothing better than to tear him apart. Can Sefton find out who the real informant is?

Chinatown 9:30
J ‘Jake’ Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is a private detective who seems to specialize in matrimonial cases. He is hired by Evelyn Mulwray when she suspects her husband Hollis, builder of the city’s water supply system, of having an affair. Gittes does what he does best and photographs him with a young girl but in the ensuing scandal, it seems he was hired by an impersonator and not the real Mrs. Mulwray. When Mr. Mulwray is found dead, Jake is plunged into a complex web of deceit involving murder, incest and municipal corruption all related to the city’s water supply.

Thursday

The Bicycle Thief 7:00
Antonio Ricci, unemployed for over two years, is overjoyed when he’s finally given a job putting up posters. There’s a catch, though – he needs a bicycle as a requirement of the job, so he pawns the family linen to get a pawned bicycle back. He goes off to his first day’s work, truly happy for the first time in years – and the title of the film gives away what happens next…

The Warriors 9:30
New York City. Home to 7,000,000 people, they work, play, and have fun by day. But at night the city is run by ruthless street gangs such as; The Furies, The Boppers, The Hi-Hats, The Lizzies, The Turnbull AC’s, The Gramercy Riffs and The Warriors. One night at an all gangs meeting, the leader of the Riffs, Cyrus, makes a speech and creates a plan to unite all the gangs of the city. One gang strong enough to overpower the police. But suddenly he is shot and a gang called The Warriors are framed by Luther, leader of the Rogues. Now they have to return to Coney Island, escaping from 20,000 policemen and 100,000 sworn enemies. They got one way out. They got one chance. They’ve got one night. THE WARRIORS .

Chinatown, My Chinatown

Monday 01 February, 2010

Controversial director aside,As one of the most compelling examples of neo-noir, Chinatown plays on the expectations built by classic whodunits like The Maltese Falcon. The hard-boiled urban detective uncovers a labyrinthine conspiracy fueled by capitalist greed and the femme fatale. Gittes thinks that’s what he’s doing, right up to when he accuses his spider-woman Evelyn Mulwray of murder. But this movie came out in the ‘70s (when Watergate and Vietnam made everyone feel helpless), and Gittes is a more timely and tellingly impotent investigator than the likes of Sam Spade. He couldn’t handle his old detective beat in the titular Chinatown of Los Angeles (a place where language barriers make you question which side you’re on) so he’s resigned himself to dealing with marital affairs. More often than not, Gittes is dead wrong. The conspiracy in Chinatown, involving phantom real estate deals and the redistribution of water during a drought, is itself just a deceptive surface, one that cloaks the very dark and intimate domestic crime that the film’s really about. Polanski’s portrait of this murky place is brilliant and nihilistic.

THURSDAY 28th

AMARCORD 7:00 PM

A year in the life of a small Italian coastal town in the nineteen-thirties, as is recalled by a director with a superstar’s access to the resources of the Italian film industry and a piper’s command over our imaginations. The town in the film is based on Rimini, where Mr. Fellini grew up. Yet there is now something magical, larger-than-life about the town, its citizens and many of the things that happen to them.

While not about Jesus, it is about those who hadn’t time, or interest to listen to his message. Many Political and Social comments.

Monty Python and The Holy Grail 7:00

The movie starts out with Arthur, King of the Britons, looking for knights to sit with him at Camelot. He finds many knights including Sir Galahad the pure, Sir Lancelot the brave, the quiet Sir Bedevere, and Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir Lancelot. They do not travel on horses, but pretend they do and have their servants bang coconuts to make the sound of horse’s hooves. Through satire of certain events in history (witch trials, the black plague) they find Camelot, but after literally a quick song and dance they decide that they do not want to go there. While walking away, God (who seems to be grumpy) come to them from a cloud and tells them to find the Holy Grail. They agree and begin their search. In the end, King Arthur and Sir Bedevere are left and find the Castle Arrrghhh where the Holy Grail is. Apologies To The Pittsburgh Telegu Community

Sunday 17 January, 2010

The Hollywood Theatre often screens Telegu language movies for the local Pittsburgh community. In December we were contacted by a local Telegu promoter to screen a movie at the Hollywood. The Hollywood was booked for January 3rd, then the screening was cancelled and then re-scheduled for January 10th. The screening was again again cancelled. We were contacted by the promoter to screen the film on the 17th. Due to the late notice, we were unable to clear the schedule to show the film in the afternoon.

From the start of our discussions with the promoters we told them that it was necessary to have the film on proper reels, because in the past when the film was loose. A several people from our organization told the promoters that due to the technical care for our equipment, it is necessary to have proper film reels. We had them talk to our projectionist who explained our needs. We must have asked them 30 times to ensure that the film would be on traditional projection reels.

On the morning of the 17th, the promoters showed up with the film not on reels, making it technically impossible to screen the film.

We apologize for the customers who were inconvenienced by this.

A Rocky Horror Guide-This Saturday At Midnight at the Hollywood

Thursday 07 January, 2010

Hey yo – we’re the Junior Chamber of Commerce Players, or the JCCP for short, Pittsburgh’s official Rocky Horror floorshow cast. We perform at The Hollywood Theater in Dormont on the 2nd & 4th Saturdays of every month at midnight. Come on down and let us thrill you, chill you, and fulfill you.

So yo help you uninitiated we are pleased to share the following

The Virgins Guide to Rocky Horror

So there you are, sat in a cinema or theatre, waiting to see Rocky Horror for the first time, when a strangely dressed person comes up to you and utters the immortal phrase “are you a virgin?” don’t panic, it’s not a proposition (although you never know your luck !) anybody that has not seen Rocky before, be they twelve or seventy is commonly known as a ‘virgin’. Let’s face it at some time in our lives we have all been a virgin as far as Rocky is concerned anyway! but don’t worry, help is at hand . In order to introduce you to the wonderful experience of Rocky Horror there now follows the original TimeWarp Virgin Survival Guide, the indispensable guide to Rocky Horror etiquette, talk-back and dress codes.

The Virgin Survival Guide – Dress
Optional, whilst some people look good in a dress, others don’t. You may find that after a show or two you may like to wear something a little more outrageous, stockings, basque, high heels (female virgins may also wear these items). you may even become a diehard fan and start to make perfect copies of the costumes worn during the film / show. For now just wear something casual but remember to follow the following four step guide of clothes that should never be worn to ‘Rocky’.

Suits, these are worn only by people who thought they were booking for ‘Phantom of the Opera’ or ‘Chicago’ but dialled the wrong number.
Sweatshirts with stripes, see next section.
Remember this golden rule:
‘There will always be someone who looks more out of place.’

The Virgin Survival Guide – Dancing
Although not compulsory, you may find that during the Time Warp you are the only person in the audience not on your feet. Pop quiz, can you spot the virgin’s in this photograph? Score one point if you said the two ladies in the foreground. Score a further two points if you spotted the people sat down in the second row. However if you said the guy in the striped shirt you score twenty points,

The Virgin Survival Guide – Props

The following items may be of use to you during the show. Please note that it is considered very bad etiquette to throw anything onto the stage, not to mention dangerous for the actors, it could mean that the show is cancelled and a thousand fans turn on you in an instance so don’t do it!

Rubber gloves, to be snapped in time with frank ‘n’ furter during the creation scene. -
Torch, used during the song ‘there’s a light’. Lighters are banned for safety reasons. -
Party Poppers, Hat, Blower. used during the Dinner/Happy Birthday scene in the play. -
Newspaper, worn over the head during the rain scene. -
Playing cards, thrown during the line ‘cards for sorrow, cards for pain’ -

The Virgin Survival Guide – Audience Parti-ci-pation

Whether you are watching the film or stage show version of Rocky Horror you will notice that the audience are talking to the screen or actors. you may even find yourself in a cinema complete with a fan performing cast. Audience Participation started back in the 1970’s in the USA and made it over to the UK a few years later. Originally only for the movie the “AP” has now become a part of the stage show as well. Fans have been dressing up, shouting back lines and singing along to the show and movie for thirty years now. Performing casts of fans act out the movie in front of the screen for the love of Rocky, not to make money out of fellow fans. So when you’ve spent your six quid or so watching a shadow cast of fans, if you’ve enjoyed it, give them the clap they deserve!

Audience Participation should always be complementary to the show, never just shouting out lines for the hell of it. The following two responses will get you started in the wonderful world of talk-back.

Brad is referred to as an ‘Asshole’, when his name is mentioned in the dialogue by the Narrator this is the correct response.
Janet on the other hand is referred to as a ‘Slut’. (Don’t go shouting out ‘Slut’ and ‘Arsehole’ all the times their names are said by other characters or during the songs though, that’s never worked and you’ll look an idiot.)

There are hundreds of talk-back lines that have been used over the years, and more are being created by the audience at every show. There is no such thing as a definitive Audience Participation script as often call back lines are topical – Rocky being called a Pokemon worked in May 2000, but isn’t so funny now. To paraphrase the great philosopher – Roger Rabbit “it only works if it’s funny”.
It should be noted that many lines that are used at the film screenings don’t translate to the stage productions. Shouting “where’s your neck?” for instance to every narrator just doesn’t work as unlike Charles Gray in the film, most do seem to have one. There are also several points in the stage show where shoutbacks shouldn’t happen. During the songs as a rule and in the final death scenes in particular.

The Virgin Survival Guide – Rocky Horror Etiquette
“Etiquette?” I hear you cry – at a show/film with the principle of “Don’t Dream It, Be It?” yep, there still is a few things to bear in mind when you are partaking of the Rocky experience.

The idea of Rocky Horror Participation is to have fun, not disrupt the show/film, the following guidelines will help you and the other members of the audience to enjoy the show to the maximum pleasure level. On the 2000 tour I had seen the theatre staff (Hackney, I’m talking about you) reduced to bringing on a line of security staff to keep people away from the stage. Due to one or two over zealous people, they seemd to feel the need to be there. Of course any of the usual fans in the front rows would never climb onto the stage during a show, but they (security) obviously had never read the guide.

If you are dressing up for the show, don’t slag other people’s costumes off. Everyone has the right to wear whatever they wish. (See exceptions: Dress). Some people make carbon copies of the ones on-stage/in the film, others take a more abstract approach. My costume tends to be a sequined green jacket, no-one in the show wears one, but everyone knows it’s me. (There is a very abstract connection to the show, ask me some time at a theatre and I’ll explain it to you!)

Talk-Back lines should be used to add to the Rocky experience, don’t try to shout down other people, they might know some better lines, the best lines are the unexpected, especially if the cast starts to giggle!!

NEVER throw rice or water at the stage, performers, spotlights or screen. It may be dangerous and may result in the show or film being halted, you might also get pulled out by security (a very painful way to be removed!)

Have Fun !

The Virgin Survival Guide – I Want More! – Hooked on Rocky Horror

Ah, it gets us all. What else can you enjoy in the wonderful world of Rocky Horror? Why not encourage others to share your Rocky experiences? the Hollywood offers group rates for tickets, so why not organize a Rocky night out for a group of your pals? Two’s company, three’s a crowd, but four and above, that’s a party. You could get to see a whole new side of them.

Above all, enjoy the show and Don’t Dream It Be It!

Start The New Year At Your Hollywood Theatre

Monday 28 December, 2009

TUESDAY
2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY
(1968) is a landmark, science fiction classic – and probably the best science-fiction film of all time about exploration of the unknown. It was released, coincidentally, at the height of the space race between the USSR and the US. It appeared at the same time as NASA’s exploratory Apollo Project with manned Earth orbiting missions – a prelude to orbiting and landing on the Moon with Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969. And it prophetically showed the enduring influence that computers would have in our daily lives. Director Stanley Kubrick’s work is a profound, visionary and astounding film and a tremendous visual experience. This epic film contained more spectacular imagery (about what space looked like) and special effects than verbal dialogue. Viewers are left to experience the non-verbal, mystical vastness of the film, and to subjectively reach into their own subconscious and into the film’s pure imagery to speculate about its meaning.

LOST EMPIRE 9:30 PM
This one must have been created by the exploitation gods (actually it was created by Jim Wynorski, but that’s as close as we come these days). It’s got it all: a plot stolen from ENTER THE DRAGON, violence, ninjas, breasts, blood, skinless geeks, bad humor, chicks in cages, bimbo mud wrestling, shower scenes… and all in the course of 90 minutes!!! Talk about brilliant! Deftly directed by Wynorski, THE LOST EMPIRE is one of the most pointlessly enjoyable films I’ve seen in quite some time. And it had to be good since the other tape I rented was unwatchable (literally) and I was not in a happy mood. Luckily, Wynorski delivered the goods and all was right in Exploitationland.

CABARET 9:30 PM It is the city of Berlin in 1930, a time when political unrest racks the country, the economy has been destroyed, and millions of unemployed roam the streets. Enter into this chaos an American cabaret dancer (Liza Minelli), working at the downtown “Kit-Kat club” where anything goes on the stage. Into this young dancer’s life come several characters such as a rich German politician, a young Jewish man struggling with his identity, an Englishman teacher from London, and of course the all-knowing, all-seeing Master of Ceremonies (Joel Grey).

Merry Christmas From The Hollywood

Thursday 24 December, 2009

me_chr1

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

And the angel said unto them,
Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Merry Christmas and
A Joyous New Year

We couldn’t do this without you guys, thanks

Holly, John, Joe and Bill

We will be closed Christmas Day as to allow The Hollywood Staff to spend time with their families

White Christmas 9:30 PM
After leaving the Army after W.W.II, Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby) and Phil Davis (Danny Kaye) team up to become a top song-and-dance act. Davis plays matchmaker and introduces Wallace to a pair of beautiful sisters (Betty and Judy) who also have a song-and-dance act. When Betty (Rosemary Clooney) and Judy travel to a Vermont lodge to perform a Christmas show, Wallace and Davis follow, only to find their former commander, General Waverly (Dean Jagger), is the lodge owner. A series of romantic mix-ups ensue as the performers try to help the General. I love this film if just for the performance of the immortal Rosemary Clooney.

Tis' The Season To Watch Movies- This Weekend at The Hollywood

Friday 18 December, 2009

Friday Dec 18th

The Commitments 7:00 PM
Jimmy Rabbitte, just a tick out of school, gets a brilliant idea: to put a soul band together in Barrytown, his slum home in north Dublin. First he needs musicians and singers: things slowly start to click when he finds three fine-voiced females virtually in his back yard, a lead singer (Deco) at a wedding, and, responding to his ad, an aging trumpet player, Joey “The Lips” Fagan. Song by song, gig by gig, the Commitments start their climb to the top: Dublin gets soul. But internal strife also builds: Deco is insufferable, Joey’s a Casanova, and Jimmy may lack the seasoning to hold things together. Will the Commitments slip away? A brilliant film by Alan Parker

The Hangover 9:30 PM
Angelenos Doug Billings and Tracy Garner are about to get married. Two days before the wedding, the four men in the wedding party – Doug, Doug’s two best buddies Phil Wenneck and Stu Price, and Tracy’s brother Alan Garner – hop into Tracy’s father’s beloved Mercedes convertible for a 24-hour stag party to Las Vegas. Phil, a married high school teacher, has the same maturity level as his students when he’s with his pals. Stu, a dentist, is worried about everything, especially what his controlling girlfriend Melissa thinks. Because she disapproves of traditional male bonding rituals, Stu has to lie to her about the stag, he telling her that they are going on a wine tasting tour in the Napa Valley. Regardless, he intends on eventually marrying her, against the advice and wishes of his friends. And Alan seems to be unaware of what are considered the social graces of the western world. The morning after their arrival in Las Vegas, they awaken in their hotel suite each with the worst hangover. None remembers what happened in the past twelve or so hours. The suite is in shambles. And certain things are in the suite that shouldn’t be, and certain things that should be in the suite are missing. Probably the most important in the latter category is Doug. The time is the late 1980s, a crucial period in the history of South Africa. President P.W. A British mining concern called Consolidated Gold is convinced that their interests would be better served in a stable South Africa, and quietly dispatches Michael Young, their head of public affairs, to open an unofficial dialogue between the bitter rivals. Assembling a reluctant yet brilliant team to pave the way to reconciliation by confronting obstacles that initially seem insurmountable, Young places his trust in ANC leader Thabo Mbeki and Afrikaner philosophy professor Willie Esterhuyse. It is their empathy that will ultimately serve as the catalyst for change by proving more powerful than the terrorist bombs that threaten to disrupt the peaceful dialogue. Between his younger brother Randy and having to handle school bully Scut Farkus, Ralphie doesn’t know how he’ll ever survive long enough to get the BB gun for Christmas. When Ralph asks his mother for a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas, she says, “No, you’ll shoot your eye out”. When Mrs. Shields, Ralph’s teacher at Harding Elementary School, assigns the class to write a theme about what they want for Christmas, Ralph sees a golden opportunity to express his desire to have a Red Ryder BB gun. Ralph gets a C+ on the theme, and Mrs. Shields has written “You’ll shoot your eye out” on the theme. Ralph’s next plan is to ask Santa Claus for a Red Ryder BB gun, and how does Santa respond? By saying “You’ll shoot your eye out, kid.” By this time, Ralph has had enough of that. When Scut Farkus and his sidekick Grover Dill start in on Ralph while he’s on his way home from school that day, Ralph knocks Grover Dill to the ground, beats Scut’s face bloody, and then pounds Scut’s head on the snow-covered ground several times. Ralph thinks he’ll never get the BB gun for Christmas now. And all of the other kids are going to be getting what they want for Christmas. But someone may have planned a surprise for Ralph.

Sorry to see the cancellation of The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh.
I have friends who worked on this movie (though today they will not admit it!) and would love to see it on the big screen.
Any chance it can be rescheduled at a future date?
