The House on Telegraph Hill may not be an A thriller, but it’s a B-plus thriller trying hard. It has an inviting premise, characters who may not be who they seem, a mountainous locale in San Francisco and a tremendous, black mansion.

Victoria Kowelska (Valentina Cortese; spelled Cortesa in the credits) is a Polish survivor of the Belsen concentration camp. Her husband was killed by the Germans and her home in Poland has been destroyed. Unbiased before the camp is liberated her closest friend dies. This was a woman who had a wealthy aunt in America. Victoria’s friend managed to smuggled her baby boy out of Poland and to the aunt fair as the Germans invaded. Given a chance at a current life in America, Victoria grabs for it. She uses her friend’s papers to lift her friend’s identity. After spending time in a relocation camp, she learns the aunt has died. She makes her diagram to America and in Original York meets the boy’s guardian, Alan Spender (Richard Basehart) . The boy will inherit the aunt’s riches when he comes of age. Spender, who has adopted the boy, is initially suspicious of Victoria, but then he seems captivated by her. Victoria believes that she can like the boy as her absorb and net security with Spender. In a whirlwind decision they marry, return to San Francisco…and then suspicious things inaugurate to happen.

If Victoria is not who she pretends to be, it may be than Alan Spender isn’t either. Hovering in the background and living in the mansion on Telegraph Hill with them is Margaret (Fay Baker), the boy’s nanny. Margaret is a tightly hurt woman, controlling, and is not ecstatic with the marriage. Into this mix drifts Marc Bennett (William Lundigan) . Before long, he and Victoria commence finding their blueprint toward a relationship of their enjoy.

The movie has several things going for it. Robert Wise, the director, takes his time setting the scene with Victoria, letting us know how her feelings for security were formed at Belsen. The action moves step by step, slowly and steadily building up our suspicions about Spender, leading us on to despise Margaret and making everyday actions like driving a car or drinking orange juice something to be wary of. The film is carefully photographed to gain mood. The shining San Francisco days and the busy streets of the city disagreement nicely with the gloominess and tension in the broken-down mansion.

What keeps this out of the A list is, I consider, the actors. They all do lovely jobs but there fair isn’t the camera-catching interest that many first-rank star actors can bring to a role. Cortese is effective and sympathetic. Basehart does a skilled job of slowly letting us discover tiny, disquieting emotions. He was a skilled actor but somehow seemed to lack the charisma that makes wicked or derangement challenging. Lundigan was a tremendous, lovely guy but who always seemed like the extra man invited to enjoy out a dinner party, graceful but not mighty there. Fay Baker, however, nearly manages to seize the movie. Her role is more complex than we’re led to acquire, and she pulls it off with skill.

I’ve always admired Richard Basehart even if I seldom found any individual role he played, especially later on in his career, very engaging. He always turned in a solid performance and he was versatile. When he started out in movies he managed to land several roles in enthralling movies that helped place his career. On DVD check him out in He Walked by Night (1948) as a very frigid criminal or in Reign of Horror (1949) as a paranoid Robespierre. He steals every scene he shares with the movie’s hero, Robert Cummings. On leisurely night cable you might accept a chance to explore him in Decision Before Dawn (1951) as a sympathetic army officer dealing with a German POW, Oskar Werner, or in Fourteen Hours (1951), a flawed film with some first-rate performances, or in a supporting role in Recount Performance (1947), his first movie. Divulge Performance is a gem; a woman kills a man, runs to a friend for attend, and when she arrives realizes that time has moved befriend a year. She has a second chance, but will anything she do produce a incompatibility?

Some call The House on Telegraph Hill a noir. It isn’t, in my opinion, especially with the term “noir” now seen as a vast marketing intention to sell frail movies. I bought Getting Strong for my 2 year passe son who is a immense Wiggles Fan. We have all of the DVDs that are out. I was tremulous that Getting Strong was going to tank with him because this is the first DVD with Sam as the yellow Wiggle. To my surprise it is a gargantuan hit. Not only with my 2 year traditional but with my 4 year venerable. Finally a DVD that they both agree on.

Getting Strong is not like any other Wiggle DVD. Each Wiggle has an equal section in the singing and dancing. You actually hear Jeff voice!!!! It is intelligent and has very catchy songs. This DVD also is very educational. The Wiggles grunt colors, letters, shapes and letter sounds. The seem to have focused on education then song this go around. Not to say the songs are not cute as always.

Greg Page was always going to be hard to replace — his affirm is remarkably profitable and he had a winning arrangement about him — but Sam Moran surprises in his first video outing. His scream is different from Greg’s, but very delicate — in some ways, more polished. He also has an amiable manner, and immediately won over my two-year-old daughter. Judging by her chatter, Sam rivals Murray for the title of her current Wiggle character. I agree with the comment that the digital backgrounds are a drawback, but as the digital work goes in these kinds of videos, what we view here isn’t awful.

It’s a waddle of the soul as a man goes home in his heart, in this dramatization of the good tale of Alvin Straight, who drove a lawn mower over three-hundred miles through the station of Iowa and into Wisconsin, to glimpse his brother, a stroke victim with whom he had not spoken for ten years. “The Straight Legend,” directed by David Lynch, recounts the narrative of Alvin (Richard Farnsworth), who place out to peep his brother, Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton), upon hearing of his stroke. Farnsworth connects with the audience from the beginning, aptly conveying the yearning of a soul in need of atonement, and the determination of the man to accomplish his amends. Sissy Spacek, also, gives a terrifically nuanced performance as Rose, the “expressionless” daughter who lives daily with demons of her gain. That the members of the Academy failed to nominate her for best-supporting actress for her work here is nothing short of criminal; her Rose is a comely fragment of work. David Lynch, as well, has done a considerable job of bringing Alvin’s yarn to the shroud. He has woven a rich visual and emotional tapestry, all poignantly delivered with a gentle hand. Beautifully photographed, the lush vistas of the Midwest think Alvin’s station of mind, underscoring the deeper meanings of what is really a spiritual swagger, during which the past mingles with the expose. Lynch has taken a wistful, almost poetic advance throughout, which, together with the chronicle is reminiscent of Ingmar Bergman’s “Wild Strawberries.” The scene in which Alvin finally meets up with Lyle is perfectly and touchingly executed, and is one of the most memorable scenes in the movie. The supporting cast includes James Cada (Danny), Everett McGill (Tom), Barbara E. Robertson (Deer Woman), John Farley (Thorvald), and Kevin P. Farley (Harold) . With an artistic hand, Lynch has crafted an unforgettable film. “The Straight Fable” is Alvin’s myth, but the lag belongs to us; a reminder of what is really valuable in life, and the needs we all fraction at one time or another. It’s an captivating movie that will touch you and beget you assume, as well; and as far as I’m concerned, that’s about as superb as it gets.

With ‘The Straight Story’ David Lynch has weaved together a subtle, piquant record about age, regret, and family. The stories that Alvin has to yell about his life are saddening, touching, and almost gruesome. He talks about being customary, about fighting in World War II, and about his regrets of not speaking to his brother. He runs into quite a few people along the diagram who relieve him out, and their stories contribute to a beautifully crafted script.

Richard Farnsworth is convincing in the role of Alvin. His abilities are most especially outlined in the shaded tone of his roar, and the seek of regret and hope in his eyes. It is rare that I have grown to respect and admire a character so distinguished. David Lynch’s direction is not gloomy or creepy like his other works, but carefully and nicely photographed in colossal harmony with the script. The cinematography is smoothe, and the extended takes show his abilities as a director and the actors abilities as well.

Take it like it wasn’t a movie. Gape no stars here. Imagine this was your grandma and grandpa in those former times travelling thru Italy to sell their intelligent house in Napoli. What a collection of astonishing, involving views! You can glimpse the valley of the Vesubio, houses that must have been built on top of other ruined houses, again and again. It’s like you travelling those places.

Now what really astonished me is not the sense of reality I got watching those locations, it was the true characters of the husband and wife. They weren’t playing any roles. They citical residence impartial developed normaly, the blueprint it develops in actual life. It’s not acting. The married couple has been drifting apart since a long time ago, and now near to a breaking point. There are no histrionics. It’s fair a regular couple like any other. If you don’t catch it, you unbiased ain’t grown up yet. I deem this is one of the best films I’ve evre seen, but I’m serene wondering why, because there’s nothing stout or spectacular about it, not even mysterious, or peculiar. It’s objective humdrum feeble time helpful visual account telling.

Watch also Rossellini’s “stromboli”. I loved both.

Though considered one of Roberto Rossellini’s greatest works, this film is actually a lesser-known film of both Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman, which is a pity because it is an absorbing film, and like most art films, possessed of more proper quality than most commercial releases, past or note.

Aside from its narrative, the film itself is a gift to posterity in exhibiting authentic street scenes, countryside, and Mediterranean landscapes and illustrious destinations of Naples, Pompeii, and Capri. The chronicle, superficially, is about a British husband and wife who are in Naples for the purpose of selling family land. The essence of the fable derives from the couple’s constant bickering, which blinds them to all that is around them – all the natural and manmade beauty of Italy that is passing before them in symbols of life and death. Each of them is too self-absorbed to realize or indulge in that everything – time, culture, draw of life – is passing, fair like the landscape as they drive along in their Rolls Royce, and in their blindness, they repeatedly forfeit the happiness of honest being alive, together, and voyaging in Italy.

Worth seeing in the film are the dated scenes of the sculpture galleries of the Naples National Archaeological Museum, also the Solfatara Crater where a guide demonstrates the vapor phenomenon to Ingrid Bergman.

We rented this from our local library for our three and five year olds. Don’t find me gross, I fancy Hello Kitty, but really, this DVD is beyond unusual. Maybe it’s fair a cultural thing, but what the other reviewer said is right. College kids with a keg might have some fun with it. One character puts a dusky booger on another character’s drawing, and when they’re mad, Hello Kitty’s friends line up at her front door and in unison, turn around, point their butts at Hello Kitty and let loose a demonstrate of flatulance reminiscent of something from Ren and Stimpy, prompting the narrator in a sing-song preschool teacher pronounce to state “Oh what an poor smell!” At one point, the characters observe a lizard on a tree and the camera cuts to two of the characters puking white foam from their mouths in a rabid point to! Another time, three “friends” rupture into Cinnamaroll’s home and graffiti on the walls some fine graphic stuff! Truly, my older kids (9 and 11) conception this DVD was hilarious and in my concept it’s noteworthy more top-notch to Aroused TV than preschool viewing!

This is truly very, very bizarre. If you’re looking for Hello Kitty, I would suggest the spellbinding series. It’s great gentler and elegant than this.

I did give it two stars because I unexcited contemplate the characters are cute, and the claymation type animation is exciting, but not colossal for preschool viewing (we’re trying to fracture our younger kids of talking about f*rts in public, etc — certainly don’t need them seeing Hello Kitty characters reinforcing terrible behavior and manners without consequences) . Appealing, definintely consuming, but be forewarned!

I had high hopes for Hello Kitty and her magical “Stump Village”. I was not dissapointed! This is the best dvd you will ever hope to select! It has it all: Cinnamoroll getting excited and baking bread, Hello Kitty getting aroused, and Pom Pom Purin picking strawberries and being extremely hearty! THE BEST DVD OF ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Friends – The Complete Fourth Season is one of Friends’ best and most memorable seasons. With happenings like Chandler spending Thanksgiving in a box, Phoebe becoming a surrogate mother for her half-brother, Ross getting married and saying Rachel’s name instead of Emily’s and of course, Monica and Chandler hooking up, the fourth season of Friends contains some of the show’s best moments, which makes it a must have for any Friends fan.

1. “The One With the Jellyfish”- In Montauk, Ross dumps bald Bonnie after kissing Rachel, who gave him an 18-page letter that he fell asleep reading. Chandler pees on Monica’s jellyfish sting.

2. “The One With the Cat”- Phoebe finds a stray cat and she thinks that it’s the reincarnation of her mother. Joey gets locked in his entertainment center that he is trying to sell, while the potential buyer robs the apartment.

3. “The One With the Cuffs”- Chandler and Joey furnish their looted apartment with a canoe and some patio furniture. Rachel’s boss, Joanna, who is seeing Chandler, leaves him pantless and handcuffed in her office.

4. “The One With the Ballroom Dancing”- Treeger, the building’s superintendent, threatens to evict the girls unless Joey can yell him to dance.

5. “The One With Joey’s Current Girlfriend”- Ross and Rachel attempt to create each other jealous with their current important others. It turns out that Ross’s unique squeeze unprejudiced wants him as a babysitter and Rachel’s beau is an immature thief. Phoebe discovers her sexy phlegm explain while she has a frosty.

9. “The One Where They Are Going to Party”- Monica’s scathing review of a local restaurant gets her hired as a chef. Mike “Gandalf” Ganderson (“only, like, the funniest guy in the world” according to Ross) is coming to town. Joanna is killed by a cab.

10. “The One With the Girl From Poughkeepsie”- Monica is sick and tired of the staff at the restaurant treating her so badly, so she decides to hire Joey unbiased to fire him in front of the crew to indicate them how tough she can be.

11. “The One With Phoebe’s Uterus”- Frank Jr. and Alice ask Phoebe if she’ll be a surrogate mother for them. Ross gets Joey a job as a tour guide for the museum.

12. “The One With the Embryos”- It is Rachel and Monica vs. Chandler and Joey in a game to derive out who knows who the best (“He’s a transponster!”) . If the girls collect, the guys have to fetch rid of their chick and duck. But if the guys fetch, they secure the mammoth, purple apartment. Phoebe undergoes implantation of Alice’s embryos and later finds out that she is pregnant.

13. “The One With Rachel’s Crush”- Kathy’s sexy appearance in a play has got Chandler timid about her faithfulness. Rachel tries desperately and clumsily to score the attention of Joshua, a newly divorced client.

14. “The One With Joey’s Dirty Day”- Rachel asks Ross to win out Mr. Waltham’s niece from England, Emily. Monica and Phoebe try to befriend Chandler catch over his breakup with Kathy by taking him to a strip club. Charlton Heston guest stars.

15. “The One With All the Rugby”- Trying to notice Emily’s rugby playing friends, Ross takes up the sport.

16. “The One With the Counterfeit Party”- When pregnant vegetarian Phoebe is tortured by her cravings for meat, Joey offers to trade dietary preferences with her. Rachel is definite to invite Joshua to an unplanned bon voyage party for Emily.

17. “The One With the Free Porn”- Joey and Chandler near upon an unscrambled porn channel and settle not to turn off the TV, in case that would develop them lose it. Phoebe finds out that she’s having triplets.

18. “The One With Rachel’s Fresh Dress”- Ross gets nervous when Emily hits it off with Susan (his ex-wife’s lesbian lover) .

22. “The One With the Worst Best Man Ever”- Phoebe’s heinous mood swings have Rachel and Monica walking on eggshells. Joey doesn’t know what happened to Emily’s missing wedding ring.

23. “The One With Ross’s Wedding”- The gang, sans a pregnant Phoebe and a heartbroken Rachel, head to England for Ross and Emily’s wedding. But Rachel decides to wing to London herself and yelp Ross that she loves him. She ends up losing her nerve to swear him when she gets there, but, of course, he ends up saying her name during the ceremony.

Resnais has a taste for British drama. One of his best films, “Providence,” was filmed in English with a salubrious cast, including John Guilgud, Dirk Bogarde, and others. His most original is taken from a stage play by Sir Alan Ayckbourn, England’s most prolific, if not best, playwright. This bittersweet concoction came to Novel York in one of the best productions to appear off-Broadway in years. Filmed in French, it continues to hasten at the viewer’s flail, tattered soul, as it exposes the loneliness of urban life in brutally exacting scenes. Shown in different settings scattered throughout the stout metropolis of Paris, a disparate collection of lost souls amble through their lives and the lives of others as though lost. Each wants, as it were, to go home, but can’t acquire his or her draw. Resnais films each scene in winter, with snow visible through office and apartment windows; the cool setting underscores the cool, hard realty of life without worship or warmth or comfort. The cast is uniformly fair. The direction, as one would question, is perfect. If you like sitting in the snow, you’ll like this. Bring a scarf.

The Paris of Alain Resnais’ “Private Fears in Public Places” (“Coeurs” <"Hearts"> in France) is a wintry, heartless region. A dwelling in which people attempt to meet, talk at rather than with each other and try their best to construct a exact connection but that is not to be as the vagaries of life invariably fetch in their arrangement.

Laura Morante, eye-poppingly pleasing as Nicole: frustrated with her fiancé, Dan (Lambert Wilson, recently separated from the Army and at odds and ends with what he is going to do for the rest of his life) are the most bright of all the couples and quasi-couples. Nicole and Dan circle each other only fitfully making anything resembling contact. They dispassionately argue, they fallacious romance: they are empty vessels and seem cheerful to remain as such.

“Private Fears in Public Places” is brilliant and radiant though at times it gets gloomy particularly when the incessant snowfall gets denser. Resnais is after obfuscation here. He seeks to muddy what we want made definite. His people are symbols, not true, thoughtful human beings: they peruse abet and immediate pleasure and enlightenment. What they earn is God’s hand squashing them like bugs.

Kind of surprising that such a accepted and arresting film, with a superior cast, clever account and fun effects, is givin such a bad transfer. It seems to be from the veteran laser disc. The characterize is flat and dismal and to me looks distinguished like the VHS copy I had already owend. Again, a really fun fascinating film, but don’t put a question to normal DVD quality on this one.

Me and my brother were flipping through the TV channels, and nothing was on, I mean nothing. Anyway we got to the Movie Channel (STAR Movies) and saw what looked like the opening credits, and then substantial blue words came across the camouflage reading “F/X.” So we watched it, saw if it was any kindly. Let me say we were comely surprised! It was beautiful positive that it was shot on a coarse budget. That made me like it all the more! Becuase you usually bag a renowned rich director and writers to save together a well-behaved action/suspense movie. But those movies, sience the director has alot of money he impartial figures he’ll blow the hell out of everything. It gets splendid annoying. But that is what I savor about this movie. Sense they didn’t have a lot of money they kept the movie agreeable was the writing and directing. Dispite the name (F/X) it is not what the movie reliys on. It relies on a shiny spot and even smarter region twists. You never know who the villian is. Plus the well mantled suspense is a plus. I cant say the biggest allotment of the space, but I can sya what it starts with. This aussie dude who makes special FX for movies (hense the name) is assigned to stage an assination on a gang member (but not really ruin him, unprejudiced form it see like he got killed with his special achieve tricks. But after that it unbiased takes so many turns, it makes it into a extraordinary whodunit. I reccomend this for anyone who enjoys a well written and directed whodunit that will support you thinking and guesing till the last bullet is shot.

This 1996 Carnegie Hall concert rates fair up there with the best — Billie Holliday, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis….. For me, watching James Carter and Joshua Redman together riff with the Carnegie Center Jazz Orch is worth the brand of admission, but there is grand, distinguished more and a collection of grand vocalists and instrumentalists having a profitable time and letting it all loose. If you haven’t heard Kevin Mahogany or caught Jay McShann (in whose band Charlie Parker slash his teeth) here’s your chance. And, if Lester Leaps In, with Redman, James Spiteful, Roy Hargrove, Charles McPherson, Flip Phillips, Carter and company doesn’t leave you wanting to dance in the gilded aisles nothing ever will. Though some purists might object to the occasional cuts (rather brief and often witty) from Eastwood movies and the laid abet comments of patron Clint himself (and his less laid aid piano playing), I found it all rather well done and thoroughly delightful. The guy’s paid his dues to this art acquire and he gets his unbiased deserts here. Above all, delicate sound, marvelous photography and almost two hours of the best jazz you will gather on film. A grand intro to jazz across generations and its contemporary energy. Beefy halt.

Viewers hoping to examine the controversial “pistol” scene, in which McGillis’s character is forced by her jealous husband to launch her legs for his gun will be disappointed to net that it has been reduce from the R-rated DVD version.
